Abstract
Transverse clefts of the face are unusual lesions that result from failure of the embryonic mandibular and maxillary processes to properly fuse and form the corners of the mouth. In a significant number of patients, there are other co -existent defects either of the face or other parts of the body, occuring as concomitant isolated findings, or within a syndrome.
Authors reported on 2 cases of transverse facial clefts. One was found to have (in addition to a facial cleft), preauricular tag, a cartilaginous rest in the cheek of the same side. The second patient was found to have right transverse facial clefts, preauricular tag and rib anomaly which shows fusion of anterior end of bony portions of the right second and third anterior ribs. Two cases were treated by a Z-plasty technique (as described by Longacre).
